" With milk quota 320kg, it’s quite tough to run a dairy farm, but there’s a hope. "
Mr. Jong-sul Cho and Mrs. Seo-un Yu couple of Jangnam Dairy Farm at 231-1 Jangnam-ri, Oksan-myeon, Cheongwon-gun, Chungbuk say that when milk production exceeds the quota, milk price per kg falls down to $0.16, and it’s even under the production costs.
It was 1994, when the couple first started to run this dairy farm. Without any specific knowledge about dairy industry, they had just tried their best to raise milk cows well, and, in the meantime, the number of cows and milk production has increased little by little. That was their little pleasure.
As a result, last year, milk-producing cows increased to 16 heads and the average milk production per head went up to 38kg, and daily milk production increased to 600kg. However, they wanted to produce much more milk. It’s hard to produce more milk than 320kg per a day because of the implementation of milk quota system. The overproduced milk priced only $0.16, called surplus milk, is having them reduce daily feed quantity and milk production. According to their plan, this year, cows were expected to give birth to baby cows and produce much more milk, but they could not help seeing 10 milk cows get slaughtered to meet the milk quota.
In addition to that, cell counts were high 500,000 ~ 600,000 for the last two years. It’s no wonder they suffered for it. However, a newspaper article about SoltoBio’s Biotite V for the reduction of cell counts attracted the attention of them, and without much expectation, started to add Biotite V in feed for three months. Though they started providing Biotite V with doubts, it resulted in the production of first graded milk and the worries about their dairy business lessened.
Mr. Cho says, “I started Biotite V addition from Dec 20, 2002, and during the first month the cell counts went up a little bit. But, after one month, cell counts number started to plunge down rapidly; first week of Feb 455,000, third week 223,000, fourth week 164,000. I was really surprised by the effects.”
Recently, Mr. Cho is living in hope even thouhg the little quantity of milk quota makes his dairy business difficult, Jangnam Farm will prosper through best quality milk production and beef cattle farming
