Jung, Gyo Ho farm owner of Dasan Farm

There’s no 100% reliable antibiotics replacement?
Antibiotics has been used to cure diseases as well as to improve productivities. However, the serious problems, caused by the use of antibiotics like antibiotics residue in the animal body and unintended generation of super-bacteria, have led to the world wide tendency of banning antibiotics use in foods, including meat from livestock industry. The article below is the abstract of the interview with Gyoho Jung, the owner of Dasan Farm, who is making a lot of profits through the addition of natural inorganic mineral instead of antibiotics, which enabled him to prevent diseases and, consequently, to cut down the medicine cost. In addition to it, productivity of the farm, on the whole, has improved.

“How come I cannot smell much?” I asked. To my question, he replied simply, “Use Biotite V.” The farm is only five years old with 1,200 pigs. Paradoxically, when Dasan Farm, which has been in the red for years because of the inexperienced farm running of Mr. Jung, turned into the black was last June 2002 when FMD (foot and mouth disease) outbreak brought down pig price to the bottom. Mr. Jung said that the use of antibiotics replacement Biotite V from Seobong BioBestech Co. Ltd. and OEM feed turned the credit of his farm into the black. Under the economic depression in swine industry, to curtail the production cost, he chose to use OEM feed instead of compound feed, and started to feed 25 kg of Biotite V in 5 tons of OEM feed.

He explained that during the period of Biotite V addition, not a pig was found which suffered diseases like diarrhea, and no dead pig. Furthermore, he could save around US $2,500 value of feed cost for a month, and the reduced cost for animal medicine: sulfa drug, antibiotics, etc. has given him US $1,700 of additional profit. Those amount of money saved is total US $4,200 for a month. Mr. Jung said “At first, I was not sure of the effects, cause it was provided free of charge. However, after a month, pigs grew up 2~3 days faster than before, dropping out of sulfa drug got the pigs less stressed, and the immunity and recuperative power of pigs improved.” Despite the above effects of the product, after several months, he got doubted about whether the effects really came from Biotite V addition or not. While he was in the doubt, coincidently, farm manager stopped providing Biotite V in feed. And then, Mr. Jung said “unbelievably, piglets got respiratory disease and diarrhea, so I finally assured of the efficacy of the product”. Right after that, he called and ordered Biotite V. He described the situation.

He pointed out that farm owners wouldn’t stop antibiotics use because of the thought that without antibiotics, profits couldn’t be secured through productivity improvement. But, he told that he believed Biotite V could replace antibiotics and used it, and the results were 10cent more profit per 1kg of pig owing to the 90% of A grade and 68% of dressing rate. In addition, before Biotite V, there were pigs weighed less than 70kg, but it improved remarkably. He says proudly that meat distributors are seeking for the pigs from Dasan Farm for the high quality meat. He smiled “one day, when I was waiting for vehicles for the pig delivery to Seoul, meat distributors wouldn’t leave the farm, so the delivery was made in the evening secretly.

According to Mr. Jung, bad smell of ammonia gas has always been the problem of swine farmers. However, after Biotite V addition, he didn’t need to use 150~200kg of probiotics for the elimination of the ammonia smell. Biotite V worked as both cost saving material and environmental problem solution. Mr. Jung told “since the improvement of the environment and gains of the farm are guaranteed after outstanding antibiotics replacement use, safe and quality meat supply is my present job to do.”
