An Emergency warning of Antibiotics Abuse

  KBS 9 O’clock News is planning to point out the serious status and solution of antibiotics abuse. Today, as the first series, Park Il Jung reporter covered the status that maximum 20 times of antibiotics are being abused at pigs and chickens.

  Park Il Jung reporter: This is the disinfection program of a chicken farm breeding 5,000 chickens. They are feeding antibiotics for 16 days which is up to half of the period from being born to ex-farm.

  A Farmer: “we usually achieve 9% mortality rate by using antibiotics. But if we use less, it is up to 20% and weight gaining is not good. "

  Normally, in our country, 1kg of antibiotics is being used for producing 1 ton of meat. It is more 20 times than in other OECD countries. It means that we are now abusing antibiotics seriously. The biggest problem is that farms are feeding antibiotics without veterinary’s prescription for the diseases which do not need antibiotics therapy.

  In addition, they are feeding antibiotics even for the ‘medicine free period’, just before ex-farm date.

  So, antibiotics are detected in the body of livestock more than the standard level and its rate is going up.

  Mr. Park (Veterinary union for people’s health): “We can reduce the use of antibiotics up to 50% just by prohibiting our adding antibiotics into feeds.”

  Abuse of antibiotics raises the resistance of bacteria against disease. Moreover, the resistance genome is spread to other kinds of bacteria.

  Mr. Woo(Professor from the internal infection department in Hangang Seongsim Hospital): “The bacteria spread to human from animal can transfer its resistance genome to human originated bacteria.”

  The antibiotics used for preventing diseases of livestock are raising humans’ diseases.
